The Scenthusiasm Solar System

The Scenthusiasm Solar System

I’m often caught talking about suns, planets, and clouds, and I’ll be doing it throughout the course, so I should probably explain why.

People who make fragrances tend to have their own way of visualising what they’re creating. For me, circles on a page work well - in the format of a solar system.

You can think of it like this:

The Sun – The most important part of your fragrance, often the scent style.

The Planets – These are the embellishments, the elements that make your fragrance stand out from others of the same style.

The Clouds – The materials you can use liberally, as they don’t upset the balance. They’re usually soft and sit in the background.

Each new fragrance I create is designed in the likeness of a solar system. I use it as a way to plan, structure, and balance a fragrance. Successful perfumery is all about getting the balance just right.

Always start with a plan

You’ll waste far fewer materials if you have a plan before you start and there are lots of ways to create a plan, but this is the Scenthusiasm Solar System way.

Perfumery is about the freedom to be creative, so plans often change—and that’s probably for the best. But without a plan, where do you even begin?

Here's an earlier film I made to illustrate it.
